Almost nothing in Krabi needs four wheel drive, and it is more useful to say that plainly than to sell you clearance you will not use. Highway 4 is sealed all the way south, Route 4034 out to Ao Nang is a wide, well kept road, and the lanes north through Route 4202 to Klong Muang and Tubkaek are ordinary tarmac.
What the class genuinely buys you is a higher seat and a calmer ride on the longer inland runs, a boot that swallows a week of wet swim gear without a fight, and a little extra composure on the stretches near the Emerald Pool and the hot springs that are patched rather than freshly resurfaced. That is the whole pitch, and it is enough on its own.
Nine of the ten SUVs on this board are road crossovers built on a car platform. One is not. Know which is which before you pick.
MG ZS, MG HS, Toyota Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30, Mazda CX-5, Honda HR-V and BR-V. Higher seat, more boot, same automatic gearbox as the rest of the board. Built for tarmac, not for tracks.
The Toyota Fortuner is body-on-frame, with real ground clearance and a low-range setting. It is the only vehicle on this board built to leave the sealed road on purpose, and it costs noticeably more per day than the crossovers.
A Ford Ranger Raptor sits alongside the SUVs at about EUR 72 a day. It rides like the Fortuner rather than like a crossover, with a load bed instead of a boot, so it suits a specific trip more than a general one.
The badge on the tailgate tells you less than the number of people and bags you are moving. Two adults with carry-on luggage do not need anything on this list; a small automatic saloon from the main board is cheaper and just as capable on every road a crossover would take.
Where the class starts to make sense is a family of four with a week's cases, or two couples sharing one car for the inland day at the Emerald Pool and the Khlong Thom hot springs. The extra boot volume and the calmer ride over the patched sections of that route are the actual argument, not the height of the wheel arch.
Krabi Info Group shows the live SUV filter above rather than a fixed shortlist, so the exact models change with the season. What does not change is the honest split: nine crossovers built for the road, and one Fortuner built for rather more than that.
Sampled from the same live search the panel above runs. Rates move with the season and how many days you book, so read these as the floor.
