What a crossover actually buys you here

Almost nothing in Krabi needs four wheel drive, and it is more useful to say that plainly than to sell you clearance you will not use. Highway 4 is sealed all the way south, Route 4034 out to Ao Nang is a wide, well kept road, and the lanes north through Route 4202 to Klong Muang and Tubkaek are ordinary tarmac.

What the class genuinely buys you is a higher seat and a calmer ride on the longer inland runs, a boot that swallows a week of wet swim gear without a fight, and a little extra composure on the stretches near the Emerald Pool and the hot springs that are patched rather than freshly resurfaced. That is the whole pitch, and it is enough on its own.

Where the extra height earns its keep

For almost everything on the mainland, no. Highway 4, Route 4034 to Ao Nang and Route 4202 to the northern beaches are all sealed and well kept, and a small automatic saloon covers them without any drama. The honest reason to book a crossover here is comfort and boot space on a longer inland run, not the road surface.

One. The Toyota Fortuner is a genuine body-on-frame SUV with the ground clearance and low-range option to match. Everything else on this list, the MG ZS, MG HS, the Toyota Cross models, the Mazda CX-30 and CX-5, the Honda HR-V and BR-V, is a road-biased crossover built on a car platform. They ride higher than a saloon but they are not off-road vehicles.

It is a more comfortable one. The run north is roughly two and a half to three hours each way on ordinary highway, and the higher seat and quieter cabin of a crossover make that stretch easier than a small hatchback would, especially with luggage for an overnight stop. It will not get there any faster, since the road itself sets the pace.

This is where the class earns its keep. A week of beach gear, wet towels and a couple of full-size cases fills a small saloon boot fast. The Corolla Cross, CX-5 and MG HS all take a full set of luggage with room to spare, and the Fortuner has more again if there are four of you travelling.

A little, not dramatically. The crossovers on this board are still four-cylinder petrol cars, so the difference against a small saloon is modest per tank. The Fortuner and the Ranger Raptor use noticeably more, being a proper 4x4 and a pickup, so budget for that if you pick either of those two specifically.
