What visitors say after a week of driving here

Read all reviews

We booked a small automatic for eight days and used it mostly to get north to Tubkaek, which is where we actually wanted to swim. Nothing about the handover was complicated.

Parking near Klong Jilad pier on a boat morning is the only thing worth planning around. The car itself was newer than I expected for the price.

The inland run to the Emerald Pool was the best day of the trip and it simply is not possible without your own car.

From landing at KBV to leaving the car park

Krabi International is a small airport, which works in your favour. There is one arrivals hall, the desks are a short walk from it, and nobody is routed through a shuttle bus to an off-site compound.

Book

Pick your dates above and compare what the local suppliers actually have free. Your total is shown in euro before you commit, and cancellation terms sit on the card rather than three screens later.

Collect

Have your passport, your home licence and your International Driving Permit out together. Walk the car with the supplier, photograph the wheels and the bumper corners, and check that the fuel level matches the sheet.

Drive

Turn left out of the airport for Krabi Town and Highway 4, or follow the signs for Route 4034 if Ao Nang is your base. Both are wide roads, and the karst towers start appearing within ten minutes.

Four directions

What a hire car in Krabi is actually for

Krabi sits on the mainland, which is the whole argument for driving here. The province is one end of a road network that keeps going, and nothing on this list involves a ferry.

Ao Nang, and the one beach you cannot drive to

Ao Nang is the main strip and most visitors sleep somewhere along it. Route 4034 connects it to Krabi Town, and a car turns the daily question of getting anywhere into a ten minute decision rather than a negotiation with a driver.

Railay is the exception and it is worth being clear about it. The limestone headland behind Railay cuts it off from every road, so no car reaches it. You park in Ao Nang, take the longtail boat across, and come back to the same car in the evening.

Klong Muang and Tubkaek

North of Ao Nang the coast loosens up. Klong Muang and Tubkaek are quieter, the sand runs longer and the view across the water is straight at the karst islands. It is roughly 20 to 30 minutes further on by Route 4202.

Public transport thins out badly along this stretch, which is exactly why the northern beaches stay quiet. Without a car you are committing to a return taxi fare every time you want dinner somewhere else.

Emerald Pool, hot springs, Tiger Cave

Inland Krabi is rubber plantation, palm and limestone. The Emerald Pool and the Khlong Thom hot springs sit southeast of Krabi Town, about an hour out, and they pair naturally into one day if you start early.

Tiger Cave Temple is much closer to town, and the stairway to the summit shrine is the reason to be there before the heat arrives. A car lets you take that hour seriously.

Khao Sok, Phang Nga, Trang

This is what Krabi has that an island base does not. Khao Sok National Park is roughly two and a half to three hours north on ordinary roads. Phang Nga is about an hour and a half to two. Trang is around two hours south.

None of those involve a boat, a bridge queue or a fixed departure time. You leave when you are ready and you come back when you are finished, which is the entire difference between a mainland base and an island one.

What is on the Krabi board right now

Sampled from the same live search the panel above runs. Rates move with the season and the length of your booking, so treat these as the floor rather than a quote.

Class Typical models here Seats Daily rate
Small automatic Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, MG 3, Nissan March 5 from EUR 18
Automatic saloon Honda City, Toyota Vios, Suzuki Ciaz 5 from about EUR 28
Crossover and SUV MG ZS, Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-5 5 from about EUR 34
Seven seat minivan Toyota Veloz, Mitsubishi Xpander, Innova Zenix 7 from about EUR 34
Pickup Ford Ranger Raptor 5 about EUR 72

Every car in the current window is automatic, so the gearbox is not a filter you need to think about. There are no convertibles and no electric cars on this board.

The mainland argument

Why Krabi rewards a car more than an island does

Most people arrive in the Andaman for the water and end up planning their days around boat timetables. Krabi is the exception on this coast, because it is attached to the rest of Thailand by road. The province has a coastline, a town, a cave temple, hot springs, a national park within a morning's drive and two more provinces either side of it, and all of that is reachable on tarmac.

That changes what a hire car is worth. On an island a car mostly saves you taxi fares inside a closed loop. Here it opens the loop. A week in Krabi with a car can include an afternoon on the northern beaches, a morning at Tiger Cave Temple, a full day inland at the Emerald Pool, a run north into Khao Sok, and still leave the boat day to Phi Phi intact, because you drive to Klong Jilad pier and park there.

The practical notes are short. Thailand drives on the left and you will want an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence, not instead of it. Highway 4 is the spine and it is a proper road. Fuel and parking are settled in baht on the ground while your booking total is fixed in euro up front. Cars here are small automatics by default, which suits the narrow lanes through town far better than anything larger.

Krabi Info Group lists what the local suppliers in Krabi actually have available, rather than a portal's shelf price with the extras hidden behind it. Booking direct with a local fleet is routinely up to 50% cheaper than the international portals for the same week and the same class of car, and several suppliers on the board offer a No Deposit option if you would rather not have a hold sitting on your card while you travel.

Questions people ask before booking

No. Railay is cut off from the road network by the karst headland behind it, so the only way in is a longtail boat from Ao Nang beach or from Krabi Town. If Railay is on your list, park in Ao Nang for the day and take the boat across. Everything else in the province is reachable by road.
Yes. Bring your home licence and an International Driving Permit together. Officers at the roadside checkpoints around Krabi do ask to see both, and your insurance position is much weaker without the permit. Arrange it at home before you fly, because it cannot be issued here.
The left. If you normally drive on the right, the first twenty minutes out of the airport are the adjustment, and roundabouts are where people hesitate. Route 4034 towards Ao Nang is a wide, well surfaced road and is a reasonable place to get used to it.
On the Krabi board, yes. Every car returned by the live search at the moment is automatic, so you do not have to filter for it or pay a premium to avoid a manual gearbox.
Krabi International Airport sits about 15 km from Krabi Town, and the run out to Ao Nang takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic through town. Collecting at the airport means you are not paying for a transfer twice.
Your booking total is settled in euro up front. Fuel, parking and any roadside snacks are paid in baht once you are here, and fuel stations along Highway 4 take cards as well as cash.
