About 20 minutes from the terminal
Straight down Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road), the mainland spine that runs the length of the province. Krabi Town gives you the riverfront night market near the Chao Fa pier and the boat counters, and it is the shortest drive out of the terminal of any base on this list.
About 30 to 40 minutes from the terminal
Route 4034 peels off Highway 4 and runs straight to the beach strip where most visitors sleep. It is a wide, well surfaced road, and it is also where you would park for the day if your actual hotel is on Railay, since no road reaches Railay at all: from Ao Nang beach you cross by longtail boat instead.
About an hour from the terminal
Continue past Ao Nang on Route 4202 and the coast quiets down. Klong Muang and Tubkaek are the two beaches locals actually rate above the main strip, and having your own car is close to essential here: the return taxi fare for a single dinner out adds up fast.
About 25 minutes from the terminal
If Phi Phi or Koh Lanta is the plan for tomorrow, Klong Jilad pier (also written Khlong Chilat) in Krabi Town is where those boats leave from. Drive yourself down, park, and the car is waiting for whatever comes after the island day.
Krabi International is a single-hall regional airport, and that single fact changes the whole pickup. Nobody boards a shuttle bus for an off-site compound here; the desks are inside walking distance of where your bag comes out.
Baggage claim and the exit doors are the only stop before the rental desks. There is no separate terminal to find and no train to a rental village.

Highway 4 and Route 4034 are both lit, sealed roads. A late arrival changes when you drive, not what the drive is like, and the desk hours here are built around flights, not office hours.

The common alternative is to take a transfer or a taxi into Krabi Town or Ao Nang, settle in, and only look for a rental car once the first couple of days are done. That plan pays for a transfer it did not need to, and it also loses the two or three days when a car would have earned its keep, since most of what makes Krabi worth driving, from Tiger Cave Temple to the northern beaches, sits outside a walkable radius of any hotel.

Bring your passport, your home licence and an International Driving Permit together, since Thailand drives on the left and the roadside checkpoints around the province do check for the permit.
One booking note worth keeping in mind: if your hotel is on Railay, no road reaches it at all. Park in Ao Nang and cross by longtail boat; everything else in the province, including the whole mainland run north to Khao Sok, is reachable on ordinary tarmac from the same car you collect today.
