Railay, also written Rai Leh, sits on a small peninsula walled in by limestone cliffs on the landward side. There is no gap in that wall wide enough for a road, no bridge across the water either side of it, and no plan on the table to build one. Railay East, Railay West, Phra Nang and Tonsai are all on that same sealed peninsula, so the answer is the same whichever of the four beaches you are heading for. A hire car physically cannot get there, and no route, shortcut or 4x4 changes that.

What that means in practice is straightforward. If you are staying in Railay and you also hire a car, the car stays on the mainland while you are on the peninsula. Most visitors leave it around Ao Nang, the same beach the boats leave from, and pick it back up when they come across. The boat itself is not a scenic add-on to the trip: for Railay, it is the trip, in both directions, every time.

None of that makes the car pointless for a Krabi holiday that includes Railay. Krabi is on the mainland, and the mainland keeps going well past the pier. The inland pools, the northern beaches, the temple outside Krabi Town and the pier your island boat leaves from are all ordinary road trips, and a car covers every one of them on the days you are not on the peninsula.

Parked on the mainland, typically around Ao Nang, for as long as you are across on the peninsula. Confirm the exact pickup and drop-off point with your supplier rather than assuming one.

Who else is not driving

Nobody. Railay has no roads for anyone, staff and suppliers included. Everything that reaches the peninsula, not only your luggage, arrives by the same longtail boats.

What still needs it

The rest of the mainland: the inland pools, the quieter northern beaches, Khao Sok further north, Tiger Cave Temple, and the pier your island boat leaves from.

What it never covers

Moving between Railay's own four beaches. That is done on foot or by the same longtails, never by car, because none of the peninsula has a road to begin with.

What people ask about getting to Railay

Yes, and it is not a figure of speech. A limestone headland runs behind the whole peninsula, and nobody has built a road or a bridge through it or around it. Every visitor, every supply delivery and every piece of luggage arrives at Railay by longtail boat. A hire car cannot make that crossing, and no amount of planning changes that.

On the mainland, not on the peninsula. Visitors who hire a car and are staying in Railay park it on the mainland side, typically around Ao Nang where the boats leave from, then collect it again once they come back across. We do not publish a named car park here, since arrangements vary by where you booked and by supplier, so confirm the pickup and drop-off point directly with whoever you hire from.

It depends on the rest of your trip, not on Railay itself, since the car never touches the peninsula either way. If Railay is the whole holiday, you may not need one until the day you leave. If you are also spending time around Ao Nang, the northern beaches or inland, a car earns its keep on every one of those days and simply waits during the days you are on the peninsula.

Two places: Ao Nang beach and the piers in Krabi Town. Both run longtail boats across to Railay through the day. Neither runs on a printed timetable. Boats generally leave once enough passengers are aboard, so turning up and waiting a short while is normal rather than a sign something has gone wrong.

Generally yes, people travel to and from Railay with normal holiday luggage every day. The boats are open and sit low in the water, so keep valuables and anything that cannot get a light splash somewhere dry, and expect to wade a short distance through shallow water at one end of the crossing.

Use it for everything else on the itinerary. A hire car still covers the inland run to the Emerald Pool and the Khlong Thom hot springs, the northern beaches at Klong Muang and Tubkaek, Tiger Cave Temple just outside Krabi Town, and the drive to Klong Jilad pier if you are also taking a boat out to the islands. None of that needs Railay to be reachable by road, and all of it is.
