A car in Ao Nang is mostly parked, and that is the point
Ao Nang is the strip: one beach road, a row of guesthouses and restaurants, and a pier at one end. You can walk it in twenty minutes, so a car does nothing for you while you are on it. What it does is sit in a lot or by the roadside until you decide to leave, and then it turns everything within about half an hour of Krabi into a normal afternoon rather than a taxi negotiation.
That is really the whole case for renting here. The beach everyone photographs is Railay, and it is the one place your car cannot take you at all, since no road reaches it and the only way across is a longtail boat from the Ao Nang shoreline. Everything else on the mainland, from Krabi Town to the hot springs inland, is exactly where a hire car earns its cost.

What the car actually solves, once you are off the strip
Where it sits while you swim
On a normal beach day the car is not doing anything. It is parked at the guesthouse or in a roadside space near the pier, and it stays there through breakfast, the morning on the sand and however long lunch takes. You only need to think about it again when you are ready to go somewhere the strip does not reach.
The radius it opens up
Route 4034 back to Krabi Town, Route 4202 north to the quieter beaches, and the inland roads toward the karst country are all inside roughly 30 to 45 minutes of the strip. None of it is reachable on foot, and a scooter or a taxi turns each trip into a separate cost and a separate wait.
Railay, without the car
One honest exception: Railay sits behind a limestone headland with no road at all, so the car parks in Ao Nang and the longtail boat does the rest of the journey. It is the single place on this list a hire car cannot reach, no matter which route you try.
Three directions out of Ao Nang, and what each one takes
Timed from the strip itself, not from Krabi Town, since that is where most Ao Nang bookings actually start driving from.
Klong Muang and Tubkaek, 20 to 30 minutes
Route 4202 leaves the strip and gets quieter almost immediately. Klong Muang and Tubkaek trade the crowds and the tuk-tuks for longer sand and a straight view at the karst islands offshore, and there is little public transport this far out, so a car is closer to necessary than convenient.
Tiger Cave, Emerald Pool, hot springs
Tiger Cave Temple sits just outside Krabi Town and is close enough for a half day. Push further and the Emerald Pool and the Khlong Thom hot springs are about an hour inland, past rubber plantation and limestone hills, and they pair well into a single loop if you leave the strip before mid-morning.
Krabi Town, about 25 minutes
The night market by the Chao Fa riverfront and the boats at Klong Jilad pier both sit in Krabi Town, roughly 25 minutes down Route 4034. Parking near the pier is straightforward outside of the morning ferry rush, which is when most people are heading the other way toward Ao Nang.
A car day started from the strip
Leave early
Pull out before the beach road fills with tuk-tuks and market setup. Anything inland or along Route 4202 is easiest in this first hour.
Cover the distance
Most destinations on this page are under an hour out, so you are usually parked and walking somewhere new before the day gets properly hot.
Fuel on the way back
Stations along Highway 4 and Route 4034 take cards as well as cash, and fuel is settled in baht regardless of what your booking total was priced in.
Park before dinner
Get back onto the strip before the evening crowd builds, and the car is done for the day. There is no advantage to circling for a closer spot once the road fills up.
